BREVEVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County families have a new, local option for specialty pediatric hospital care.
Under an agreement with Nemours Children’s Hospital of Orlando, Nemours will provide hospital-based pediatric physicians who specialize in the care of acutely ill infants, children and adolescents.
This will allow doctors from Nemours to provide on-site care at Wuesthoff Medical Center – Rockledge. The newly renovated pediatrics wing at Wuesthoff Medical Center – Rockledge consists of nine private rooms.
By September, newly recruited Nemours pediatric hospitalists will begin working closely with primary care providers and other pediatric specialists to care for children hospitalized at Wuesthoff Medical Center – Rockledge.
They will also be available to consult with the Wuesthoff Medical Center – Rockledge emergency department.
“This relationship brings a new level of expertise to the Wuesthoff Health System that will help us provide hospitalized children with high quality, specialized medical care,” said Tim Cerullo, CEO, Wuesthoff Health System.
“Nemours is well known for their exceptional care of pediatric patients, and we are pleased to work with them to make these services available in our community.”
Nemours Children’s Hospital (NCH) opened in October 2012 in Orlando’s Lake Nona Medical City close to the Orlando International Airport.
NCH offers advanced pediatric specialty care never before offered in Central Florida including two pediatric interventional radiologists, a neurologist who specializes in the treatment of neuromuscular disorders and the only surgeon in the southeast who treats children living with intestinal failure.
“Everything we do at Nemours Children’s Hospital is focused on providing the very best care for children,” said Roger Oxendale, CEO of Nemours Children’s Hospital.
“We are proud to extend our expertise in caring for kids to work alongside the excellent team of physicians at Wuesthoff.”
There has been a great deal of support from local pediatricians and other members of the community for the new pediatric service at Wuesthoff and subsequent relationship with Nemours.
“I am excited for the grand opening of the renovated Pediatric Unit at Wuesthoff Medical Center – Rockledge,” said Tai F. Yang, MD of Florida Pediatrics, PA.
“As Wuesthoff Health System continues to grow, they have done an outstanding job of fostering the relationships within the community and improving the services offered to its residents.”
Nemours is an internationally recognized children’s health system that owns and operates the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., along with major pediatric specialty clinics in Delaware, Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
“The agreement between Wuesthoff Health System and Nemours Children’s Health System is an exciting chapter in the future of healthcare for our county and its youngest residents,” said John Kennedy, MD, of Pediatrics in Brevard.
“Having Nemours hospitalists available for patients within our community is an invaluable resource in the event of a childhood illness or medical emergency.”
Wuesthoff Health System includes Wuesthoff Medical Center-Rockledge and Wuesthoff Medical Center-Melbourne, both full acute care hospitals and Wuesthoff Health Services, a network of affiliates providing hospice, home care, home medical equipment and assisted living services.
