Lakeland Wins Pitchers’ Duel Against Brevard Manatees 1-0

BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – Jorge Ortega’s complete game effort was not enough as the Brevard County Manatees (24-31, 53-71) fell to the Lakeland Flying Tigers (15-38, 48-74) 1-0 at Joker Marchant Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jared Reaves led off the frame with a single to center field. After a Tim Remes sacrifice bunt, Tyler Hanover singled home Reaves for the eventual winning run.

Ortega (9-9, 2.40 ERA) allowed just the one run on eight hits over eight innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out one. Ortega hasn’t walked a batter in 15.1 innings and has allowed just 11 free passes 138.2 innings this season.

Despite taking the loss, Ortega set a new Brevard County franchise record by tossing his sixth complete game of the season.

Gage Smith (1-0, 0.00 ERA) earned the win for Lakeland by throwing four shutout innings of relief. Trent Szkutnik threw the first five frames and surrendered just four hits.

The Manatees and Flying Tigers will continue the series tomorrow night. RHP Brandon Woodruff (3-5, 3.75 ERA) will get the ball for Brevard County. Lakeland will send LHP Kevin Ziomek (7-10, 3.70 ERA) to the hill.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
