BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – As Tropical Storm Erika moves closer to Florida, the City of Melbourne would like to remind residents to please be prepared.

“We will continue to watch the storm very closely over the next 24 hours to see what level of activation we need to consider,” said City Manger Mike McNees.

“We encourage everyone to pay attention to the weather forecast and to prepare.”

“Preparation is key in defending ourselves and recovering from a severe weather event,” said Melbourne Fire Chief Chuck Bogle.

“While the current models show the storm tracking more to the east, we should remember that in 2004, Hurricane Charley was projected to make landfall in Tampa yet without warning made a hard right turn into Port Charlotte.”

City leaders will continue to monitor and advise the public of closures or specific precautions.

“We encourage everyone to take appropriate action to prepare for the storm,” said Bogle. “If there happens to be no impact from the storm, you will still be ready and will have practiced preparing for the next storm that comes our way.”
