BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Big smiles greeted the new clothes, shoes, backpacks and supplies – and kid-friendly dinner of nachos, mini-pizzas and chicken nuggets – at the back-to-school party Aug. 10 at Pridmore Center for Women and Children.

The party was presented by Zonta Club of Melbourne, with efforts led by the group’s Pridmore Committee chair Debbie Buza of Grant, who volunteers regularly at the shelter operated by the Salvation Army.

Zonta Club of Melbourne is an ongoing supporter of the Pridmore Center. The center and party got a boost this year from a $1,000 check from Regions Bank on West Haven Avenue in Melbourne, donations of many items from Regions Bank employees, and a $200 contribution from Brevard Value Motors LLC, which learned about the upcoming event during a trip to the bank.

Almost 20 children and their mothers were staying at the transitional housing facility, which also accepts women without children.

“The women and children appreciate the party and supplies, but when you hear a child get excited about new underwear, you know that you are doing a great job for these children,” Buza said.

“It always stirs my heart to hear a child excited about underwear. It tells me how little they have and how much it means to them to be like everyone else.”

Zonta Club of Melbourne, a part of Zonta International, was charted in 1983 as an organization of professionals working to advance the status of women.

Local efforts include supporting nonprofits that assist women, awarding scholarships and serving as leaders in the fight as human trafficking.
