BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Eastern Florida’s volleyball team dropped its home opener on Tuesday, falling in straight sets to Daytona State College at the Titan Field House on the Melbourne Campus.

The 15-25, 13-25, 15-25 defeat dropped Eastern Florida to 2-5 on the season. Daytona State improved to 2-4.

Eastern Florida allowed Daytona State to go on lengthy runs in each set to turn slim margins into substantial leads.

The visitors broke away from a 6-5 advantage in the first set to build a 17-7 lead, broke away from a 12-10 lead in the second set to the 25-13 winning margin and from a 13-12 third-set advantage to the 25-15 set and match-winning victory.

“We really have to get better at transferring the things that we’re learning in practice and put them into action,” said Eastern Florida head coach Andrea Rasmussen.

“We’re at a point right now where we’re making so many unforced errors. In the second set we had 20 unforced errors. It doesn’t matter who you’re playing you’re not going to win with those numbers. We have to eliminate mistakes. We have to be able to build a run and end a run.

“We have to get better,” said Rasmussen.

Things don’t get an easier for Eastern Florida as it hosts nationally 17th-ranked Santa Fe College (3-1), which posted a straight sets victory at home last Saturday, at 10 a.m. Saturday in Melbourne.

The Titans then play South Florida State College (0-2) at 2 p.m. Santa Fe and South Florida play at noon.

Admission is free.
