GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA (Gatorzone.com) – Senior defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard has been added to the 2015 Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List on Thursday, as announced by the Maxwell Football Club.
The original watch list for the Bednarik Award (College Defensive Player of the Year) was comprised of players who were selected based on their performances during the 2014 season. Players added to the list “warrant(ed) attention because of their noteworthy play” this season.
Through Florida’s first six games, Bullard boasts a team-high 9.5 tackles for loss, tied for third-most in the SEC and 12th-most in the Football Bowl Subdivision this season.
The Shelby, N.C. native also became the first Gator since Alex Brown (2000) to tally at least two tackles for loss in three straight games, doing so in consecutive victories over East Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee. Additionally, Bullard leads Florida with 4.5 sacks, ranking him fourth among SEC players this year.
Those figures helped the Gators record 10-plus tackles for loss in four consecutive games (Sep. 12-Oct. 3) for the first time since at least 1990. Florida’s defense is currently riding a seven-game multi-sack streak, tying the 2005 team for the program’s longest run since 1998.
Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced on Nov. 2, followed by the announcement of three finalists on Nov. 24.
The winner of the 2015 Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show, which will be held on Dec. 10 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 11, 2016.
