TALLAHASSE, FLORIDA (Seminoles.com) – The ninth-ranked Florida State football team collected a pair of honors from the Atlantic Coast Conference on Monday following the 41-21 victory over Louisville.
Junior wide receiver Kermit Whitfield was named the ACC Receiver of the Week, while sophomore linebacker Jacob Pugh grabbed ACC Linebacker of the Week accolades.
Whitfield had a dazzling nine-catch, 172-yard, 1-TD performance against the Cardinals, tying his career-high in receptions and reaching 100 yards receiving for the first time. Whitfield caught a 70-yard touchdown pass – FSU’s longest pass completion of the season – that proved to be the winning score in the third quarter.
The Orlando, Fla., native ran over 50 yards for the score after the catch. The conference honor is the second of Whitfield’s career. He was named ACC Specialist of the Week on Nov. 11, 2013 after scoring a kick return touchdown at Wake Forest during his freshman season.
Pugh, who plays the Buck linebacker position, had two sacks and a game-high seven tackles versus Louisville. The Dade City, Fla., native matched his career high in tackles and set a career-best for sacks. Pugh led a defensive effort that recorded a season-high five sacks – FSU’s most since 2013 – and held Louisville to just 99 yards rushing. It’s his first ACC player of the week honor.
Golson Named Manning Award Star of the Week
Florida State quarterback Everett Golson was named one of eight “Stars of the Week” by the Manning Award on Monday.
Fans can go to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page to vote for the best performance before voting closes at 11 a.m. (CT) on Thursday. The top vote-getter will be named the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week.
Golson completed 26 of 38 pass attempts for a season-high 372 yards and three touchdowns in FSU’s 41-21 win over Louisville. Florida State trailed at halftime (7-6) for the first time all season, but the redshirt senior signal-caller directed five consecutive touchdown drives in the second half to give the Seminoles a 20-point victory.
Golson has thrown for 1,449 yards and 11 touchdowns with no interceptions, while leading FSU to a 6-0 record.
