Titusville resident Haleigh Hodges might be new to volunteering for the Doctor’s Goodwill Foundation, but her love of helping others makes her the perfect candidate to fit right in.
The University of Central Florida Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences graduate is currently attending UCF’s College of Medicine at Lake Nona.
During high school, Haleigh volunteered at the SPCA of North Brevard cleaning dishes and linens and helping to keep the facility clean. She also fostered kittens and during summer while in college, she volunteered at Parrish Medical Center in the emergency department.
Working in the emergency department was a very rewarding experience, she said. It also gave her a love of interacting with patients and helped get her ready for medical school.
While in college, Haleigh volunteered with UCF’s Alternative Break Program, spending a week at Parkwood Farms Therapy Center. The Center is a horse-assisted therapy center for children with mental and physical disabilities in Snelville, Ga.
There she spent her days maintaining the property, grooming the horses, and assisting the children in therapeutic games and exercises.
“Volunteering at Parkwood was very humbling and rewarding. It allowed me to view the special needs community from a different perspective, as well as practice patience and compassion,” she said.
Haleigh’s first time volunteering with DGF was this spring when she spent a day volunteering with her mother at the group’s annual Health Expo.
She said volunteering is important to her because it is a way for her to help others and give back to the community while developing compassion, empathy, patience, determination, and a strong work ethic that will help her become a “great” physician in the future.
