Melbourne police arrested Laurie A. Wright on Saturday about 5:30 p.m. for Driving Under the Influence after striking a bicyclist in the area of Pineapple Avenue and St. Clair Street.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Melbourne police arrested Laurie A. Wright, 52, on Saturday about 5:30 p.m. for Driving Under the Influence after striking a bicyclist in the area of Pineapple Avenue and St. Clair Street.

According to Melbourne Police Lt. Tim Turner, the bicyclist called the police after he was struck and the vehicle failed to stop.

“Additionally, a concerned motorist noticed the vehicle driving recklessly on North Harbor City Boulevard where it was nearly involved in several collisions,” said Lt. Turner in a release.

“They followed it to 3099 Park Village Way where the police made contact with the driver, Wright, still seated in the vehicle.”

Wright subsequently failed sobriety tests that were administered and was arrested. Wright provided a breath sample that rendered test results of .199 and .210.

Wright, who has a previous DUI conviction, was charged with Leaving the Scene of a Crash without giving information, Reckless Driving, DUI-Prior Conviction and DUI-Property Damage/Personal Injury.

“The Melbourne Police Department is dedicated to reduce DUI related offenses in the city,” said Lt. Turner.

“Since January 2015 the Melbourne Police Department has conducted an estimated 118 DUI investigations and will continue to search out suspected DUI violations within the City of Melbourne.”
