Rebecca Fleeman is a busy young sophomore at the University of Florida where she is majoring in applied physiology and kinesiology.

That’s pretty heady studies, but that doesn’t prevent Rebecca from volunteering at the UF Weight Management Lab.

“I believe that almost all diseases can be prevented through healthy lifestyle and diet,” she said.

That’s why she works so hard volunteering and conducting studies on how to best help obese people in rural North Central Florida lose weight sustainably.

She initially accompanied the nurse of the study on trips into the community for assessment and screening of study participants.

GETTING THE HEALTH MESSAGE OUT

During her spring semester, she was able to become an assistant group leader in the study where she met with a group of men and women to teach them about nutrition and fitness along with helping them problem solve through their weight loss journey.

This semester, she is conducting phone screens to ask people to join the study and make sure they are a good fit.

“I really love being part of this research study,” she said. “When people know better, they do better, and I believe that we need to get the health message out to more people.”

Rebecca said she is thankful to her parents for instilling her dedication to health and for helping others.

“I love to share my knowledge about health with others so that they can realize that nutrition and fitness is not a burden, it can be easy and fun,” she added.
