BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Following extraordinary performances over the past week, women’s tennis player Mariana Castaneiras and football running back Antwuan Haynes have been named Florida Tech’s Panther Student-Athletes of the Week.
Castaneiras ran the gauntlet at the Bethune-Cookman hosted Juan Varon Wildcat Invitational in Daytona Beach, Florida. The sophomore captured the Women’s Juancho Singles title after going undefeated in singles competition on the weekend.
The Mexico City, Mexico native shutout Iowa State’s Natalie Phippen before topping Olivia Rolle of Florida A&M to advance to the finals. In the championship, Castaneiras took down Hilary Hanton of the home Wildcats 6-2, 6-2 to claim the crown.

The speedy freshman broke school records in both rushing yards (242) and rushing attempts (28) against the Hawks.
For his efforts, Haynes was named the Gulf South Conference Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week for Week 9.
