BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Following extraordinary performances over the past week, women’s tennis player Mariana Castaneiras and football running back Antwuan Haynes have been named Florida Tech’s Panther Student-Athletes of the Week.

Castaneiras ran the gauntlet at the Bethune-Cookman hosted Juan Varon Wildcat Invitational in Daytona Beach, Florida. The sophomore captured the Women’s Juancho Singles title after going undefeated in singles competition on the weekend.

The Mexico City, Mexico native shutout Iowa State’s Natalie Phippen before topping Olivia Rolle of Florida A&M to advance to the finals. In the championship, Castaneiras took down Hilary Hanton of the home Wildcats 6-2, 6-2 to claim the crown.

Haynes had one of the most prolific performances in the history of the FIT football program, leading the Panthers to a 28-24 win over Shorter Saturday night at Florida Tech Panther Stadium. The speedy freshman broke school records in both rushing yards (242) and rushing attempts (28) against the Hawks.

For his efforts, Haynes was named the Gulf South Conference Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week for Week 9.

The FIT tennis teams wrapped up their fall season in Daytona Beach. The Panthers will return in the spring with the commencement of head-to-head duels competition.

Football is at home again this Saturday, locking horns with GSC leader and No. 1 ranked West Georgia at 1 p.m. ET at Florida Tech Panther Stadium.

The contest not only marks FIT’s Senior Day but is also the Panthers’ annual Homecoming Game.
