About Officer Mario Gutierrez
On October 29, 2013, Officer Gutierrez was on patrol and noticed an individual tampering with a gasoline storage tank at a gas station. The individual had started a fire on top of the valve system attempting to cause a large explosion. Officer Gutierrez knew if an explosion occurred, the entire gas station would be destroyed, potentially killing anyone in the immediate vicinity.

Putting himself in danger, Officer Gutierrez shut off the valve to the pumps rendering them inoperable. Officer Gutierrez then responded to the individual, who became increasingly violent, and Officer Gutierrez sustained multiple wounds from the interaction. Officer Gutierrez’s life threatening injuries were sustained due to the quick response of Airport District Motor Officer Juan Leon (pictured above) and he was transported to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The medical staff met the Officer Gutierrez outside and stabilized him, saving his life. Thanks to the quick action of Officer Gutierrez, many lives were saved.
