BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – Brevard County District 2 Commissioner Jim Barfield’s proposal to increase the local gas tax an additional 6 cent per gallon to finance Brevard County road repairs was defeated on Thursday evening during the commission’s workshop meeting.

District 4 Commissioner Curt Smith, along with District 3 Commissioner Trudie Infantini, voiced their non-support of the gas tax, which killed the initiative as an agreement of four out of the five commissioners was needed to move forward with a vote at the regular Brevard County Commission meeting on January 26.

“I can tell you that I’m not in favor of the gas tax,” said Smith.

District 5 Commissioner Andy Anderson then proposed a referendum on the ballot next November that would give Brevard County voters the opportunity to approve a half cent sales tax.

Thursday night’s workshop, which lasted about five hours, included input from more than 30 members of the public and became heated when Commissioner Infantini accused Commissioner Robin Fisher of a “lack of decorum.”
