BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA –  The Florida Highway Patrol reports that a 54-year old Merritt Island man was killed Sunday night at bout 9:45 p.m. when he fell off his bicycle as he crossed Courtney Parkway at Spruce Avenue, and was then hit by an unidentified vehicle.

According to Sergeant Kim Montes, Public Affairs Officer for the Florida Highway Patrol, the unidentified vehicle, possibly a pickup truck, was traveling southbound on Courtenay Parkway in the left through lane.

The bicyclist had fallen off his bicycle as he traveled from the west side of Courtenay Parkway to the east side. As the victim got up and was attempting to get back on his bicycle, he was struck by the unidentified vehicle, which then fled the scene.

“The bicyclist was pronounced dead on scene and the vehicle left the scene,” said Sgt. Montes in a release.

FHP said witnesses indicated that the unidentified vehicle is possibly a pickup truck.

The victim has not yet been identified by authorities.

The road is closed in the area and an investigation is underway.
