BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Wickham Road, which has been closed to traffic between Eau Gallie Boulevard and Aurora Road in Melbourne to allow installment of a stormwater drain, will reopen to traffic eight days ahead of schedule on Friday, March 25.

The $800,000 project to mitigate flooding problems in the area began Feb. 22 and was scheduled for completion by April 2.

Excellent weather conditions, along with coordination and cooperation from on-site contractors, have aided in moving the project along and ahead of schedule, according to Brevard County Public Works Director John Denninghoff.

“Our work crews and managers have been very efficient and productive throughout the construction of this project, and as a result of this we are happy to report that we are running well ahead of schedule,” said Denninghoff.

“We now expect to open Wickham Road to full traffic flow on or before March 25. While we have benefitted from excellent weather, this high performance has been made possible due mainly to the determined and efficient efforts of everyone involved including the workmen, their manager, the engineers, inspectors, mechanics, procurement staff and more.”

New curbs have already been poured, backfilling operations are being completed and the road restoration effort is under way.

“Once the road is re-opened, we will focus our work on other project efforts outside the road area, and that will continue for several more weeks,” said Denninghoff.

“These efforts are associated with the creek banks downstream of the road, to prevent it from eroding during major storm events. This work is not expected to impact Wickham Road traffic.”

The grant-funded stormwater project involved installation of an additional drainage culvert (there were two 8-foot by 5-foot box culverts already under Wickham Road at the Eau Gallie River) and other improvements to protect flood-prone homes, especially those in the Kingsmill and Longwood subdivisions, and other homes and businesses along the Palomino Road and Aurora Road area.

The area suffered major flooding as recently as Tropical Storm Fay in 2008.

The additional 110-foot long, 8-foot by 5-foot culvert will increase the capacity of the drainage system, thus reducing frequency and duration of flooding events.

The county has posted daily updates on Facebook of the project’s progress, including aerials shot by a drone, since it began a month ago.
