(Telegraph.co.uk) – Fishermen in Japan will have needed a super-sized hook to land an absolutely frightening Megamouth shark.

The extremely rare creature was reportedly caught in fishing nets around five kilometres from Owase Port in Mie Prefecture, located in the southern-central region of Japan’s main island.

It weighed around a ton, according to Yahoo Australia, was an estimated five metres in length and eventually bought by a local fishmonger.

The first sighting of a Megamouth shark, a species usually found near Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines, was only confirmed in 1976.
