'thank you from the bottom of my heart'

Last week I received an anonymous letter from a Brevard County citizen that truly made me smile and even more proud of our agency if that is possible.

BREVARD COUNTY SHERIFF WAYNE IVEY: Last week I received an anonymous letter from a Brevard County citizen that truly made me smile and even more proud of our agency if that is possible.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Last week I received an anonymous letter from a Brevard County citizen that truly made me smile and even more proud of our agency if that is possible.

It is a touching correspondence that I believe needs to be shared as it identifies the true meaning and impact of your Brevard County First Responders.

While I do not know who the Deputy and Officer are, I am very proud of the message they sent and their interaction with a young adult who clearly credits them with impacting their life in a positive way.

“To the Deputy who patrolled the NASA Causeway in 2006 and anyone interested in a thank you and mercy given.

It’s been 10 years, almost to the day, since you pulled me over on the side of NASA Causeway, and I wanted to say thank you. Thank you for that day and for each decision you made.

I didn’t understand at the time the importance of the decisions you made, and what it would do for the rest of my life, but I have had ten years now to think about it. You gave me one of the greatest gifts, you gave me the rest of my life.

You may not remember me, but I will never forget that day. You pulled me over because I was driving well over the speed limit, and when you saw age 16, you lost it. The chewing out you gave me at my driver’s side window is one of the worst I’ve ever sat through, but I know now that it was given out of fear.

I know because when you stood at the back of my car you told the NASA Officer who joined you in pulling me over about your 16 year-old and what a wakeup call this was for you.

The two of you talked about slapping me with everything you could in order to teach me a lesson, which included an arrest. I had to call my parents, you spoke to them and they were at the scene in five minutes. When my father got out of the car, I asked you then to go ahead and take me to jail.

I didn’t care about the arrest that I would have for the rest of my life, but you did. You knew that I would never escape that, and after a short discussion with my parents, you knew I was in good hands.

You gave me a minimal ticket, and the NASA Officer gave me a warning, and you left me to my parents. They had me relinquish my license to the DMV for one year, as they told you they would.

Well I want you to know that you were right. Ten years later, I am married with a dream job and a very bright future. I graduated college summa cum laude with an honors degree. I have worked for a State Representative, backpacked through Europe, lived in Spain, seen the Mayan Ruins, and visited the Kyoto Imperial Palace. I have had an incredible ten years.

None of this would have been possible without the two of you that day. If you had not shown me mercy, if you had taken me to jail, I would have a very different life. I know that. I am so grateful that you did not allow my 16 year-old self, and my stupid 16 year-old decisions to destroy the unbelievable life I have had.

You took a chance on me and I am forever grateful. So thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

I would ask you to join me in commending all of our first responders and public safety members for the wonderful impact they have on our communities each and every day.

On behalf of the 1,500 proud men and women of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office I want to personally thank the author of this letter and share with them that we are so glad you have achieved such success in your life.
