Little League Report: Merritt Island Will Represent Section 3 In State Tournament

Merritt Island Little League is the 10/11/12 Baseball Section 3 Champions and will represent Section 3 in the State of Florida Tournament next weekend in Fort Pierce.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – District 22 hosted the 10/11/12 Baseball All-Star Section 3 Tournament at Mims Little League’s Holder Park with the following results:

GAME #1: SAN MATEO 20, NW VOLUSIA 8: In the first game of the day, the District 11 Champions from San Mateo Little League met District 19’s Champions from Northwest Volusia Little League. For San Mateo, Kameron Davis had a 3-run homer and Linwood Powell hit a 2-run Homer both in the 1st inning.

Northwest Volusia answered in the bottom of the 1st when Dominik McDermott hit a solo home run and Brandon Neely hit a 2-run homer. Neely added another solo homer in the 4th and Stewart Puckett hit a 2-run home run while Clayson Null added a triple to Northwest Volusia’s offense, but it wasn’t enough.

San Mateo put 20 runs across the plate as Jonathan Gaines pitched the entire game for San Mateo’s 20-8 win in 4 innings.

GAME #2: MERRITT ISLAND 7, NW VOLUSIA 0: In the second game, the District 22 Champions from Merritt Island Little League (visitor) faced Northwest Volusia Little League. Garrett West reached base on a walk, but Northwest Volusia was not able to plate the run.

Merritt Island’s Grant Paparella hit a solo home run in the 5th and Layson Handwork hit a RBI double. Paparella pitched the 6-inning shutout allowing 1 walk while striking out 13, as Merritt Island won 7-0.

GAME #3: MERRITT ISLAND 19, SAN MATEO 6: The final game of the day was a winner-advance competition between Merritt Island and San Mateo. San Mateo’s Mikey Williams hit a 3-run homer while Jonathan Gaines went 2-for-2 at the plate scoring 2 runs and receiving a walk.

Merritt Island’s Rylan Diaz hit a 3-run home run and Grant Paparella went 4-for-4 with three 2-run homer s and Tyler Coutu added a RBI double in the 19-6 win. Merritt Island’s Gage Garcia and Anthony Cartegena combined for the 4-inning win allowing 4 hits while striking out 10 and walking 5.

In Section 3 play outside of District 22, Port St. John Little League’s 10/11/12 Softball team represented in St. Augustine.

• Port St. John won their first game against the District 19 Champions from Palm Coast Little League. However, they lost the final game to District 11’s San Mateo Little League and was unable to advance to State play.

• Indian River City Little League‘s Junior Baseball team was in Deland for Section 3 play, but did not advance.

• The Merritt Island Little League 9/10/11 Baseball team was in Coral Springs for their State Tournament, but did not advance out of pool play.

• Merritt Island Little League’s 8/9/10 Baseball team were at Chaires-Capitola Little League in Tallahassee for their State of Florida Tournament. The Section 3 Champions won a nail-biter of a game Friday night against Section 8’s North Springs Little League’s by a score of 1-0 in 8 innings.

They also won both of their Saturday games by defeating Section 6’s Lehigh Acres 6-4 in 7 innings and the Champions from Section 1, Niceville-Valparaiso Little League, 12-6 in 6 innings.

This advanced them out of pool play to the Final Game where they met the buzzsaw Plant City Little League team from Section 4 and were defeated 12-2.
