PUBLIC SERVICE HALL OF FAME INDUCTION SET SEPT. 24

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The first annual Space Coast Public Service Awards and Hall of Fame Induction Gala will be held Saturday, September 24 inside the spectacular Canaveral Port Authority’s Cruise Terminal 1 at Port Canaveral.

The purpose of this event is to celebrate the value and virtue of the highest standards of public service to our community, highlight the contributions and devotion of public service, recognize the sacrifice and efforts of public servants, while encouraging future generations of public servants to pursue careers in this important sector.

These highly prestigious awards will recognize and honor our dedicated public servants who have served with distinction, selflessly serving our community, and whose work can be viewed as models of public service within and outside the work environment.  They have poured their talents, time and resources into helping and improving the lives and future of others.

Award winners will be selected from all areas/levels of public service and citizens who have made significant public service contributions and will be evaluated by the PSA Committee on their efforts and accomplishments in the following areas:

• Made a positive and profound difference in the lives of our citizens.
• Was willing to take risks to affect and achieve positive change or the protection of our communities.
• Set aside personal gain for the betterment of society.
• Championed social equity, community improvement, justice and democracy.
• Devoted a career to protect our freedoms, develop our future and make Brevard County a better place to live, work and raise our families.

NOMINATION SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS


Nominations may come from any source, but must include:

• A cover letter from the nominator including contact information and reason for nomination.
• A one-page summary of the accomplishments of the nominee.
• Photograph of the nominee.


Due to the heavy volume of nominations, the deadline has been extended through July 31, 2016. Public Service professionals to be considered may include Active, Reserve, Retired and Deceased members.

AWARDS AND CRITERIA

Public Service Lifetime Achievement Award

This award recognizes public service professionals who have dedicated years of service during a distinguished career where he/she significantly advanced the public safety profession, and by substantial service, has furthered the cause of justice and the mission of public safety. The award is presented to a deserving individual (living or deceased) who has taken a long-term leadership role in a public service profession.

Recipients of this award are recognized for making extraordinary contributions and sacrifices through a body of work that positively impacted his/her organization and community over his or her lifetime.

The PSA Awards Committee will identify and recognize up to three Lifetime Achievement Award recipients with the prestigious Public Safety Hall of Fame induction for demonstrating careers that have greatly contributed to the advancement or promotion of public safety and community service in the pursuit of justice and the protection of freedoms and constitutional rights.

Lifetime Achievement Award nominations may come from any source, but must include:

Distinguished Merit Award

The award recognizes public service professionals who have performed with exceptional skill, technical expertise, commitment, and innovation while demonstrating sustainable results. The nominee should demonstrate exceptional performance and/or have demonstrated an act of outstanding personal bravery in the line of duty and defense of state and citizens at imminent personal hazard or risk of life.

Partnership Award

Public service is vital to the community and should be encouraged, promoted and formally recognized. The philosophy behind community partnerships is to recognize excellence in private sector partners and public service working together to address community problems and enhance public safety in their communities.

This honor recognizes an individual, business, group or organization for continued or exceptional performance, support and advancement of public safety and community service. Additionally, the award may be presented to a Brevard County individual, business, institution or organization for their community support, or commitment to health, environment or professional development of future public service members through professional excellence and innovative practices.

The recipient should have demonstrated an ability to be progressive, innovative, and; identifies a citizen, business, group or organization whose assistance to public safety and service had a positive bearing on an outcome while contributing to the furtherance of public safety awareness, community involvement and sustainability.

Legislative Service Award

This award recognizes those professionals who promote legislation or ordinances that would enhance public service by providing superior support for the residents of Brevard County as well as our many visitors. This award supports legislative and quality of life issues of a public safety and service nature that may favorably affect public safety, community service, and the safety of those members and their communities.

Making a Difference Award

Recognizes individuals or groups who have, through continued acts, made significant contributions to improving the quality of life or palliation for citizens of Brevard County, through expertise, spiritual/emotional representation, faith based leadership, ingenuity, generosity, education, and health care for members of the public service community, or those emotionally/chronically/terminally/critically or seriously ill, which significantly impacts the lives of others.

Leadership Award

The award recognizes individuals who have excelled in community oriented activities that are collaborative, cooperative and leadership proactive. This award highlights the importance of safety, health, education, human resource development and enhanced relationships that are essential to Brevard County. Nominees should be longtime advocates for the community and have longstanding reputations for encouraging community involvement.

Special consideration will be given to those that embody the spirit of collaboration with other businesses, non-profits, or government, in social responsibility and professional development efforts. Nominees should build and articulate vision, display exceptional decision making skills, foster motivation and remain true to the highest ethical standards at all times.

Emerging Influential Award

Presented to an emerging influential (40 years old or younger) for exceptional leadership and outstanding contributions to the community during the past year. This individual represents innovation and embodies how business success, professional growth, passion, mentorship, and community involvement go hand-in-hand in public service.

Non-Profit of the Year Award

Presented to a Brevard County associated non-profit for outstanding and visionary contributions to the community during the past year. Special consideration will be given to nominees who demonstrate excellence in collaboration with businesses, other non-profits, or government, in their social responsibility efforts. This award recognizes community safety impact and quality of life accomplishments.

Outstanding Military Service Award

Presented to a Brevard County citizen, business or organization for outstanding and visionary contributions to supporting the region’s active-duty/reserve military community, their families and/or veterans during the past year. Special consideration will be given to nominees who have created and fostered a long-term commitment to supporting these efforts.

The award also recognizes members (Active/Reserve/Veterans) of our Armed Forces who have performed with exceptional skill, sacrifice, technical expertise, commitment, and innovation in partnership with our local public safety / service members while protecting and in defense of our state and citizens. Brevard County is either home or bases many of our Nation’s finest and this award provides the recognition they have earned and deserve.

Claude “Jake” Miller Public Safety Member of the Year Award

This award recognizes a public safety member who has made outstanding contributions to Public Safety / Community Service and his/her organization or who has demonstrated conspicuous valor or bravery in the performance of their duties. The award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions or accomplishments in their community directly related to Public Safety.

The award is given in memory and honor of Claude “Jake” Miller, who served as Sheriff of Brevard County, Florida, (1980-1996). This award is intended to recognize professionals from the public safety community who have shown unusual initiative, dedication and imagination in the performance of their duties, or, a significant, heroic or meritorious act involving the mission of their organization. The quality of the service or effort is the essential factor.

Norm Wolfinger Justice Award

This award recognizes innovative and effective individuals and/or programs whose efforts have made positive influential differences in improving local, state or federal systems of justice in either criminal or civil arenas. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions, accomplishments or advocacy directly related to the improvement of justice and civil rights.

The award is given in memory and honor of Norman Wolfinger, who served as State Attorney of the 18th Judicial Circuit, Florida, (1984-2013). This award is intended to recognize professionals who have shown unusual initiative and imagination in the performance of their duties involving the mission of their organization concerning integrity and character, contributions to the public good and welfare, contributions to trial advocacy, and contributions to the legal profession. The quality of the service or effort is the essential factor.

Administrative Professional Excellence Award

This award recognizes public service employees who have made exceptional contributions to sustain and strengthen their organizations. This award recognizes an administrative professional for outstanding contributions and service to the organization. This individual has continually shown dedication and commitment to the agency through innovation and by either making significant contributions over a period of time or by having made an exceptional contribution to a specific project, which has had a significant and positive impact on the agency, organization or community.

Any employee in the administrative field who has made an exceptional contribution to the office is eligible for award consideration. This may include administrative assistants or professionals who perform in an administrative capacity. The nominee should be an imaginative and creative individual who possesses outstanding administrative or technical ability and exercises leadership and initiative. The nomination should explain what specifically the nominee contributes to the organization.

The involvement of the nominee should have directly resulted in one or a combination of the following: demonstrated administrative/secretarial skills, demonstrated support for personnel internal and/or external, or demonstrated creativity or resourcefulness in accomplishing major assignments. In addition, the following factors should be considered when making a nomination: performance over a period of time or connected with a singular accomplishment that demonstrated proactive and in-depth work resolving one or more of the organization’s mission.

Highway Safety Award

This award recognizes a state/county/city organization or public safety member who has made outstanding or significant contributions to traffic safety or those who have shown unusual initiative and imagination in developing traffic safety programs.

This award is designed to recognize individual efforts such as traffic engineers, educators, judges, prosecutors, motor vehicle examiners, public safety professionals, etc., who have made outstanding contributions to save lives and protect property in highway safety programs and community traffic safety issues.

Award of Purple Heart

The award of Purple Heart is given to those who have sustained personal injury in the performance of duty, inflicted by an assailant with a dangerous and deadly weapon.

Exceptional Citizen Award

This Award may be presented to individuals or groups who demonstrate outstanding achievements in some or all of the following: exceptional volunteer service to a public agency or the community, willingness to extend themselves to help others; improving quality of life in the community, and exemplifies good Samaritans and citizenship.

Examples might include, but are not limited to: demonstrating exceptional service of an altruistic nature for the greater good of the environment (e.g. act of bravery, humanitarian work, fundraising activities; voluntary participation in community organizations, government sponsored activities); demonstrating evidence of willingness to extend themselves to help other members of the community with a high degree of excellence, professionalism and integrity in the performance of their work (e.g. demonstrates exceptional service either directly or by supporting others who provide service to the community; serves as a model of service to the community; shows imagination, creativity and innovation); and contributes significantly to improving the quality of life in their community.

Young Citizen Award

The Young Citizen Award is presented to secondary or post-secondary students (21 years of age or younger) who best exemplify the spirit of zealous volunteer community service. The nominee must be a in good standing at a secondary or post-secondary educational school in Brevard County; demonstrate outstanding volunteer community service; display humanitarian principles by word and deed and be nominated for the quality of the humanitarian activities rather than for the quantity of activities. The student’s age must be included on the award nomination.

Heavy Lifting Award

The Heavy Lifting Award is presented to exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable, and skilled educators, managers, or leaders in any state-approved or accredited Brevard County School to include post-secondary institutions; who have gone above and beyond normal duties and have demonstrated the highest degree of commitment, professionalism and excellence; who inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn; have the respect and admiration of students, parents, and colleagues; play an active and useful role in the community as well as in the school; are poised, articulate, and as highly effective advocates for their students; possess energy and are passionate. Nominees can be either current, former or retired employees.

Chief Deputy Doug Waller

Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Doug Waller is a 30 year law enforcement veteran. Chief Waller holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Florida State University and Master’s Degrees from Webster University in both Human Resource Development and Leadership. He has served a patrol deputy, Agent, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Major and Commander. His career also includes assignments to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the supervision of local/state and federal Task Force Units and the supervision and direction of the agency’s Criminal Investigations Division. Chief Deputy Waller was recognized as the 2012 Manager of the Year by the National Management Association and Governmental Leader of the Year by the Child Abuse Prevention Task Force. He is a graduate of the 204th Session of the FBI National Academy and the Southern Police Institute (University of Louisville) – Command Officer Development Course 25th Session.
