Space Coast Sports Promotions Hosts 2016 AAU Boys Basketball National Championships

For the 25th consecutive year, Space Coast Sports Promotions welcomed 108 teams from 28 different districts to the AAU Boys Basketball 11U Division I, II, and 6th Grade National Championships.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – For the 25th consecutive year, Space Coast Sports Promotions welcomed 108 teams from 28 different districts to the AAU Boys Basketball 11U Division I, II, and 6th Grade National Championships.

Only teams that have qualified through AAU Qualifying Procedures are eligible to compete in the National Championships.

Games begin at 9 a.m. in seven different locations in Brevard County: Cocoa High School, Cocoa Beach High School, Cocoa Beach Recreation Center, Clearlake Education Center, Heritage High School, Palm Bay High School and Ascension Catholic High School.

Nearly 1,500 athletes and coaches have traveled with their friends and family to participate in the week-long tournament.

The economic impact is in excess of $8 million dollars and 7,000 room night stays for Brevard County. Notable past attendees include former NBA Center, Shaquille O’Neal, and 2016 NBA Champion, LeBron James.

“With almost three-fourths of NBA players having participated in events such as the AAU National Championships, it is a breeding ground for profession athletes, but more importantly, it is a breeding ground for our future lawyers, preachers, doctors and educators because of the life skills they are learning to carry with them to their adult lives,” said Rusty Buchanan, AAU 1st Vice President.

The Amateur Athletic Union is one of the largest non-profit volunteer sports organizations in the country.

As a multi-sport organization, the AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports programs.
