Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission – Despite unseasonably wet weather in 2016, the Florida grasshopper sparrow perseveres.
Recent footage from an FWRI nest camera project captured the moment nestlings left the nest for the very first time.
A parent brings food and carries away a fecal sac to keep the nest area clean, and one nestling leaves the nest but quickly changes its mind.
It’s a cheerful scene for a subspecies at the brink of extinction.
We’re asking birdwatchers and photographers to please do your part to help protect this critically endangered bird.
Refrain from visiting Florida grasshopper sparrow areas during the nesting season (April-September) and give them the space they need to reproduce successfully.
