Gaston Now Tropical Storm, Projected To Take Northwest Route Through Central Atlantic

HURRICANE SEASON UPDATE

Tropical Depression Seven formed off the coast of Africa and strengthened to Tropical Storm Gaston on Monday evening.

TS Gaston is projected to take a northwestward route through the central Atlantic and is currently not a threat to land.

DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK

At 1100 PM AST (0300 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Gaston was
located near latitude 12.6 North, longitude 30.7 West.  Gaston is
moving toward the west-northwest near 18 mph (30 km/h) and this
general motion with a slight decrease in forward speed is
expected during the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 40 mph (65 km/h)
with higher gusts.  Additional strengthening is expected, and Gaston
is forecast to become a hurricane Tuesday night or Wednesday.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km)
from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1005 mb (29.68 inches).
