BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Genealogical Society of South Brevard will sponsor a basic genealogy class on Wednesday evenings beginning on September 14.

Classes will be held at the Melbourne Library, located on Fee Avenue, and will run from 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. The cost is $35 which includes materials and a one year membership in the Genealogical Society of South Brevard.

“We provide materials for family historians, beginners genealogy courses, frequent Tid Bits in emails, a Bulletin and monthly programs for those wanting to improve their research skills,” said Deb Plaag.

The society’s genealogy library, meeting room and classroom are located in the Melbourne Library, 540 E. Fee Avenue, near the downtown area of Melbourne.

CLASS SCHEDULE

CLASS 1: WHY GENEALOGY? – Overview of basic forms used in genealogy – Discussion of genealogy software programs, their features and other software products available.

CLASS 2: RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET- Free and subscription sites – Search engines and other aids – downloading and printing forms – Taking and keeping research notes – Organizing your research.

CLASS 3: USING SOURCES FROM THE FAMILY & HOME – Photography in family history – Correspondence – Interviews – Indexes, numbering and ahnentafel systems.

CLASS 4: PERSONAL HISTORIES – Searching for the family history in print – using the library, local research opportunities and sites, archives, societies.

CLASS 5: USING THE US DECENTENNIAL CENSUS – State and local census records – soundex and miracode indexes.

CLASS 6: USING MILITARY RECORDS TO FIND ANCESTORS – Courthouse records – finding vital records – Searching land and property records.

CLASS 7: FINDING YOUR IMMIGRANT ANCESTOR’S HOME – Settlement patterns and migration routes – Hereditary and patriotic societies – Class wrap-up.
