(FOX NEWS) – North Korea confirmed that it had conducted a “nuclear warhead explosion” test Friday, defying international sanctions and increasing diplomatic pressure to curb its nuclear ambitions.

Pyongyang said the test was meant to counter what it calls U.S. hostility.

North Korea’s state TV said that the test elevated the country’s nuclear arsenal and is part of its response to the international sanctions following its earlier nuclear test and long-range rocket launch in January and February.

North Korea said it will continue to take efforts to strengthen the quantity and quality of its nuclear weapons.

The North’s test comes eight months after its previous such detonation and it produced its biggest-ever explosive-yield, South Korean officials said.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye strongly condemned the test, saying in a statement that it showed the “fanatic recklessness of the Kim Jong Un government as it clings to nuclear development.”
