Florida Tech To Host The Drawings of China Marks At New Foosaner Exhibition

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Radiant Messenger: Drawings by China Marks opens Oct. 22 at Florida Institute of Technology’s Foosaner Art Museum, featuring over 50 complex stitched and collaged fabric drawings by New York-based artist China Marks.

The exhibition will be on view until Jan. 7, 2017.

The stitched drawings, mostly made over the last three years, were created using an industrial sewing machine, thread and scraps of fabric.

As former New York Times art critic Grace Glueck noted, Marks’ drawings are “pieced together with wizardly dexterity.” Using a collagist strategy, Marks creates complex narratives that, Glueck wrote, “reflect the world we live in all its glory, horror, and absurdity…”

Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Marks trained as a sculptor, earning a master’s of fine arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 1976.

Since then, her work has been shown in galleries and museums in the United States and Europe. And she has received numerous grants and fellowships, most recently a 2011 fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts, which named her a Gregory Millard Fellow, and a 2013 grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation.

Carla Funk, director of university museums and curator of the Foosaner exhibition, describes Marks’ works as having “an impressive skill” and “passion.”

“I love the tactility, hybrid characters and bizarre narratives that Marks creates with her sewn drawings,” Funk said. “She achieves true philosophical probing through her mixture of the absurd and the tragi-comic.”

China Marks will present a lecture about her work at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at Foosaner Art Museum’s Harris Auditorium. Admission is $5 per person, or free to museum members and Florida Tech students, faculty and staff.
