First Flag of the New State of Florida Consented To and Adopted In December 1845

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Florida Senate officially consented to and adopted the first flag of the new State of Florida on December 27, 1845.
It was unfurled at Governor Moseley’s inauguration on June 25 of that year, even though the Senate objected to the motto, “Let Us Alone.”
It was because of this disagreement, and the fact that the State House of Representatives and State Senate acted through different resolutions at different times, that the flag was never officially adopted.
During the Civil War, a number of unofficial flags flew throughout the state and it was not until 1868, when Florida was readmitted into the Union, that a new official flag and seal were approved.
The current design was adopted in 1900.
