President Obama said in an interview released Monday that he would have beaten Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump “if I had run again.” In his most pointed critique yet, Obama said Hillary Clinton’s campaign acted too cautiously out of a mistaken belief that victory was all but certain. AXELROD (voiceover): I first met Barack Obama when he returned to Chicago from law school in the early ’90s to run a voter registration drive. And while I didn’t realize at that moment where history would take him, I was taken by him, as someone who really cared about public service, was committed to devoting his life to it, and together, we had an incredible journey.

Now, as the new year approaches, the days are ticking down on the Obama administration, and so I went by the White House to sit down with my old friend and reflect on the road he’s traveled.

AXELROD: So Mr. President, I actually came over to help you pack.
(LAUGHTER)
But I really appreciate you dropping by. This is a great surprise to be able to sit down with you. You know, I was over at the Kennedy Center the other night…
