BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday at 2 a.m. with the clocks “springing forward” one hour.
The history of Daylight Saving Time goes all the way back to inventor and politician Benjamin Franklin, who proposed a form of daylight time in 1784. He wrote an essay “An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light” suggesting candle usage could be reduced by getting people out of bed earlier in the morning, making use of the natural morning light instead.
Safety experts reminds residents to use this time-change to also change out all smoke detector batteries and make sure they are working properly.
According to the National Fire Prevention Association, roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires in the small percentage of homes with no smoke alarms.
In one-quarter of the reported fires in homes equipped with smoke alarms, the devices did not work, resulting in a death rate that is up to 50 percent higher than homes that have working smoke alarms.
Residents that don’t have working smoke detectors in their homes should take the necessary measures to acquire one for each end of the house, specifically outside all sleeping areas where it can be heard in the event of a fire.
Smoke detectors are available at local hardware stores and are easy to mount.
