Florida Tech Panthers Alexus Smith Earns Conference Softball Player of the Week Award

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech Panthers third baseman Alexus Smith has captured the Sunshine State Conference Softball Player of the Week Award.

The sophomore had an outstanding series at the plate and defensively on the hot corner vs. Palm Beach Atlantic at Nancy Bottge Field at FIT.

So far this season, the former Bayside Bear star leads her team with a .347 batting average.

The Palm Bay native has collected 33 hits, 15 doubles and owns an astounding .632. slugging percentage, which is fourth in the Sunshine State Conference.

Smith is also tied for the Panthers lead in RBI’s with 25 and is second in home runs with four. Both stats are good for third and fourth respectively in conference play.

Defensively, she is second on the team with 55 assists this season.

Smith does lead the SSC with 15 doubles on the season.

During the series vs. Palm Beach Atlantic Smith batted .455 with a 1.091 slugging percentage. She went 5-11 at the dish with two round trippers, one double and drove in seven of the 16 runs FIT scored in winning two out of three from the Sailfish.

She also fielded her position perfectly handling all eight chances hit to her at third.

Starting Friday, Smith and her teammates will travel to Winter Park Fla. for a weekend conference series against Rollins College.

The Panthers are just 1-5 in SSC play so far this season but can pick up ground with a good weekend vs Rollins, who is 5-4 in conference play. Florida Tech is 16-17 overall but have won five of their last games.

Since 2015 FIT is 3-3 vs. Rollins.

The first pitch is set for Friday at 6 p.m. ET with Saturday’s title starting at 1 p.m. ET.
