BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Kindred at Home, a home health, hospice and community care services company, has launched STEP ON IT! at The Fountains of Melbourne, a KISCO Senior Living community.

Kindred at Home is one of the nation’s largest providers of home health, hospice and community care services, delivering innovative, high quality care to patients across the United States.

STEP ON IT! is a senior wellness program that encourages people to exercise, which can lead to improved health and reduced risk for falls.

The program helps seniors make and stick to a plan for being more active, showing that an ambitious exercise program isn’t always necessary; simply walking more can bring positive changes.

The program outlines simple fixes – such as ensuring you’re wearing shoes that fit properly, or getting your eyes checked regularly – that can make a difference in the amount of activity a senior is able to accomplish.

“Seniors who remain active can reap great benefits to their quality of life,” said Bridget Brown Senior Clinical Home Health Specialist of Kindred at Home in Melbourne.

“Increased activity results in improved health, but also improved attitudes when seniors can participate in the things they enjoy doing with friends and family. Even increasing your walking by a few steps a day, then building on that amount over time, can produce positive results.”

STEP ON IT! is a senior wellness program that encourages people to exercise, which can lead to improved health and reduced risk for falls.

Program participants receive a comprehensive guide that outlines the importance of increased movement and provides tips on what they need to do prior to getting started, such as making your home a safe environment for walking and reducing falls, and finding a buddy to help stay motivated.

Many participants use a pedometer to track their daily steps and watch the miles accumulate over the course of each week.

Participating seniors have engaged in the program by forming teams and having virtual walking journeys with themed celebrations when goals are met.

Some teams use commemorative awards as motivators – for example, to note a milestone in the number of steps taken or to recognize those whose activity is most improved during a week or month. Others log weekly totals on posters, fostering not only a collective sense of accomplishment, but some friendly competition as well.

The Fountains of Melbourne senior living community has set its first walking destination to Key West.
