BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Women are always looking for ways to enhance their appearance. Accessories are a great tool in the fashion arsenal to achieve this. The most impactful accessory is the earring.

Earrings can make your face appear wide, thin, long or fat depending on your face shape. As a stylist, I help women select the right accessories based on many criteria.

When selecting, earrings face shape is the first, most important consideration.

If you have a round, or circular face, meaning widest at the cheekbones with no taper to the chin, long, drop or dangle earrings are best. They will elongate your face and make it appear slimmer.

Avoid repeating your face shape with a circular earring which will emphasize the roundness.

If you have a long, thin face choose earrings that emphasize the width of your face. Studs, clustered earrings, short dangles and hoops in a medium to large size are a perfect enhancement. Any type of round earrings will widen your face, and make it look fuller.

Some faces are more square with the forehead and jawline being similar in width. This requires softening of the hard edges of the face. To achieve this, choose earrings that have rounded edges and are medium to long in length.

Oval shapes soften as circular and hoop earrings work well also. Stay away from studs or earrings with square edges or geometric shapes that will reinforce the squareness.

If the forehead is wider than the cheeks and the lower half of the face narrows like a heart, this is a heart shaped face. Here we must counterbalance the sharp chin with chandelier or tear drop earrings to fill in the lower portion of the face for more balance.

Having an oval shaped face is cause for celebration. These ladies can wear almost any shape but triangular or stud earrings will show off lovely cheekbones best.

When looking for the perfect earrings you should also make sure they fit the occasion. Wearing earrings to work, for example, should fit with the atmosphere. The more conservative the office, the more conservative the accessories.

It is believed that executive dressing means no dangle or hoop earrings, but this depends on the corporate atmosphere. Avoid large earrings if you are in a traditional or conservative field such as finance or law.

Show Your Personal Style

The time to show your personal style is outside of work. This is where you can let your personality shine and be a little more daring but don’t forget to dress for the occasion in this situation as well. Most importantly, have fun.

Don’t forget to take into consideration your personal accessory style. There are several and you could fall into one or a few.

You might be a romantic style type if you enjoy pretty, feminine clothing with ruffles or lace many times in florals and pastels.

If you fall into the romantic accessory style you will select earrings with curvy, rounded or ornate details.
Dramatic ladies are often called “city chic” and bold. You will want larger earrings in bold shapes like square or rectangular but of course you can always pull off the oversized hoop or duster.

Classic style ladies will choose simple looks like small hoops or button earrings. They like gold, silver and pearls with a classic timeless look.

Natural styles are just that, natural. Ladies in this category like small and simple. They choose understated earrings you can barely notice. Nothing shiny or too detailed will work for them.

The last factor is metal tone. You will want to select a finish that suits your skin tone. Make sure you know your season.

If you have warm undertones in your skin, such as yellow or peach, you are a fall or spring and look best wearing gold and copper metals.

If you have pink undertones in your skin, you are a winter or summer. Silver and pewter are the perfect choice to look fabulous. Choosing the perfect type of earrings depends on so many factors.
