BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County Sheriff’s deputies shot and wounded a man on Tuesday at Merritt Square mall.

According to Brevard County Sheriff’s Office PIO Tod Goodyear, deputies responded to the Merritt Square Mall, located at 777 East Merritt Island Causeway, Tuesday at approximately 1:21 p.m. in response to an aggressive subject at the mall.

During a press conference, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said that a construction worker was confronted by his employer for his erratic behavior.

Merritt Square mall security then called the Sheriff’s Office.

“Upon arrival, deputies located the subject who was in the rear parking lot of the mall,” said Goodyear.

“The subject began advancing on the deputies armed with a long metal fencing post. The suspect refused to comply with the deputy’s commands to drop the weapon and was shot by one deputy as he advanced on both deputies. The threat was neutralized and the suspect was transported to a local hospital in serious condition where he is currently being treated.”

The investigation is ongoing as BCSO Agents are interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence at the scene.
