UPDATE: 12-Year-Old Boy Charged With Two Felonies In Connection With Book-Burning Brush Fire

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Officers from the Melbourne Police Department responded to the report of a brush fire in the area of Snicole Avenue and Dairy Road Monday afternoon about 2:30 p.m.

According to Melbourne Police Sgt. Brian Hart, upon arrival in the area, officers from the Melbourne Police Department, West Melbourne Police Department, along with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, located a brush fire in the area of 3064 Snicole Avenue.

“The fire was quickly encroaching homes in the Manchester Lakes Subdivision,” said Sgt. Hart.

“Fire crews from the Melbourne Fire Department, Brevard County Fire Rescue and Palm Bay Fire Department began battling the fire while law enforcement personnel initiated pre-cautionary evacuations of residences. Simultaneously, a juvenile male called 911 advising that he had started a fire in the woods. Officers were able to locate the juvenile with his family and learned he was 12 years old.”

Fire crews from the Melbourne Fire Department, Brevard County Fire Rescue and Palm Bay Fire Department began battling the fire while law enforcement personnel initiated pre-cautionary evacuations of residences. The fire eventually pushed into the backyards of several properties burning one yard and a fence, however, no structures were damaged. (BCFR image)

According to Sgt. Hart, the investigation determined the 12-year-old boy was attempting to make a video of himself for YouTube burning his school books.

“Due to the ground being extremely dry, the land around the book caught fire and quickly spread into the surrounding woods,” said Sgt. Hart.

“The fire eventually pushed into the backyards of several properties burning one yard and a fence, however, no structures were damaged.”

Based upon the totality of the incident, a Juvenile Referral has been completed and submitted to the State Attorney’s office for the following charges: Intentional burning of lands (Felony, 3rd Degree) and Criminal Mischief (Felony, 3rd Degree).
