BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey had a strong message for the local community about the latest events across the world which addressed the growing threat of terrorism and violent shooters.

With most recent events in Europe, around the world and approaching the one year anniversary of the Pulse Orlando massacre, Sheriff Ivey addressed the need for citizens to have a plan and be prepared if a person finds themselves in a terror situation or active shooter event.

“As everyone knows, I am probably the most politically incorrect sheriffs in the country, and to be honest, I’m good with that,” said Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey.

“What I’m not good with is sitting back and letting the emergency happen, or even worse, sitting back saying “it wont happen here or it won’t happen to me.”

Ivey mentioned the ‘Four A’s To Survival’ made available on BCSO’s website that includes a 5-minute video that addresses the need for Awareness, Arm (arming yourself), Avoidance and Attack.

“It’s very important to remember while the terrorist or violent attacker may have a weapon or even the element of surprise, a team of citizens working together to attack the suspect has a much greater chance of survival than allowing the suspect to operate unimpeded,” said Sheriff Ivey.

“It takes great courage to attack someone who is trying to attack you or your family but unfortunately it may be the only thing that saves your life and the life of those you dearly love.”

Ivey noted the events of 9/11 and how devastating the thousands of lives that were lost.

However, a group Americans took action aboard United 93 and teamed up to save many lives after attacking the four terrorists that had taken over the flight. United 93 crashed in a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, after a struggle within the cockpit between the passengers and terrorists. That action, by those brave Americans, didn’t let the terrorists use the plane to hit their target on that fateful day and saved countless lives.

“It takes a community, to protect a community,” Ivey added. “

“And right now is the time to prepare for the emergency, so we can do everything possible to protect ourselves and those around us should that day ever come. Best case scenario, you are mentally and physically prepared and that day never happens.”

The Brevard County Sheriff talked about one of the courses his office offers to the public, “Self Defense Through Tactical Shooting & Decision Making” Course.

The course is an 8-hour course that is designed to give civilians the opportunity to learn safe gun handling skills as well as the legal aspects of gun ownership. BCSO says the course is delivered in 4 parts:
