ABOVE VIDEO: The Brevard Rockets will host the Volusia Stingrays in the Varsity B Championship game this evening at the Space Coast IcePlex.

The Pittsburgh Penguins aren’t the only hockey team one game away from winning a hockey championship.

 

The Brevard Rockets will host the Volusia Stingrays in the Varsity B Championship game this evening at the Space Coast IcePlex.

Game time will be following the charity game between the BCSO Enforcers and the AFTAC Hockey Team from Patrick Air Force Bae.

The Rockets are a regional high school hockey team based at the Space Coast Iceplex in Rockledge.

The team consists of players from Brevard county and surrounding communities and they participate in the Central Florida High School Hockey League.

Since there are not yet enough players to have a full-fledged high school league, the CFHL’s teams are made up of student athletes that attend high school in the county the team represents.

The Rockets are a regional high school hockey team based at the Space Coast Iceplex in Rockledge, FL.

In the case of the Brevard Rockets, a good portion of the players represent Viera High School. Speaking of the Rockets, they advanced to this point by beating the Orange Crush last week, 1-0 as goaltender Dan Thew stopped all 26 shots he faced,

Alex Snyder provided the lone marker of the contest 11:04 into the second period and the Rockets defense made it stand the rest of the way with Thew rock solid between the pipes.

On the year the Rockets are 6-3 while the Volusia Stingrays enter the title game at 4-5.

The two teams faced-off back in mid-May with Volusia stinging Brevard for a hard fought 3-2 win. The game was physical as the teams combined for 48-minutes in penalties.

For Brevard, Forward Steven Rossi leads the way this season with 10 goals and five assists in nine games.

The Stingrays enter with the top two leading scorers in the division in Gavin Zerkle, who has 12 goals and eight assists for 20 points and the leading goal scorer in the division, Zach Kimmel.

Kimmel has an impressive 15 goals in just eight games this season.

The Rockets are coached by Jeff Jones, who is a homegrown Florida hockey success story.

The man responsible for getting the Rockets into full flight is John Batchelor, Vice President for the Central Florida High School Hockey League.

Batchelor, along with countless others are responsible for the success that the Brevard Amateur Ice Hockey Association has become.

The BAIHA oversees the development of youth hockey in Brevard County, Florida, including the Spacecoast Hurricanes program (Mites thru U-16) and the Brevard Rockets Regional High School Hockey Team, all based at the SpaceCoast Iceplex.

Founded over 12 years ago, the mission is to offer safe, fun, competitive hockey to anyone desiring to play. The organization strives to provide a structure that’s conducive to meeting the goal of fair and safe play.

Each year, the committee reviews and evaluates the current needs of the hockey community to ensure they are offering the best and safest experience possible for each player. They then put the talents of their dedicated volunteers to work on producing the finest support structure possible.
