ABOVE VIDEO: In the ruthless game of hockey, the Space Coast IcePlex’s Hurricanes Sled Hockey Team are the Ginger Rogers to the Fred Astaire of traditional hockey players. They do everything the other guys do, and then some. Each of the Hurricanes cope with a history of disabilities, everything from cerebral palsy and war-related injuries to horrific car accidents, but doesn’t stop them from becoming fierce competitors…and winning.
Sled hockey is based on an adaptive device known as a sled, which is basically two skate blades and a runner in the front to form a tripod. Players use two shortened hockey sticks with a blade on one end a pick on the other to propel themselves across the ice.
The Hurricanes program is very successful but hockey is an expensive sport so come on an out and support this great team by watching two of Brevard County’s finest teams battle it out.
Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey will drop the ceremonial first puck.
The game will be broadcast live on SPACE COAST DAILY TV with Alan Zlotorzynski providing the play by play.
