BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – According to the website,  All That Is Interesting, Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week is both a response to and an example of popular interest in one of the world’s most-feared predators, the great white shark.

Even though you’re more likely to be bitten by another person than by a shark — let alone a great white shark, millions flock to their televisions each week this time of the year as The Discovery Channel educates and recounts nightmare stories of the ocean’s most talked about predator.

Launched July 17, 1988, Shark Week is now broadcast in over 72 countries and since 2010 has become the longest-running cable television programming event in history.
