BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office has an opening for a Certified Latent Print Examiner. The job has a salary range of $23.03 to $26.84 an hour.

Job Description

The purpose of the class is to analyze, compare and evaluate fingerprints and latent prints. The class is responsible for fingerprint and latent print examinations and issue reports with the result of the examinations. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed under general supervision.

Position Duties

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Evaluates fingerprints and latent prints submitted by various inter-departmental personnel and other law enforcement agencies.
  • Analyzes and compares known print standards (finger/palm/foot) of subjects (living and/or deceased) with questioned documents and latent print evidence.
  • Utilizes computer software to facilitate the examination process of latent and known prints.
  • Reviews and/or verifies other examiner’s case work (analysis, comparison and evaluation of fingerprint and latent prints).
  • Documents the results of examinations and forwards copies to requesting personnel/agency.
  • Enters AFIS quality latent prints into the automated system for search and compares results of returned candidate fingerprints.
  • Ensures documents, reports and correspondence are correctly updated as required, filed in a timely manner and secured in appropriate location consistent with Agency policy.
  • Performs other duties as needed and directed by supervision.
  • Testifies in court as an expert witness regarding examinations and reports issued for examinations.
  • Provides instruction in the proper procedure for recording fingerprints.
  • Regular, dependable and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of and the ability to maintain current Latent Print Examiner Certification from the International Association for Identification (IAI).
  • Two (2) years of full-time continuous experience developing latent prints and analyzing fingerprints for identification in a public jurisdiction or law enforcement agency.
  • Requires a valid Florida Driver’s License; must maintain throughout the tenure of employment.
  • Must obtain FCIC/NCIC certification within three (3) months of hire.

Additional Information

Work is performed in a secure office environment.

Work is primarily completed in eight (8) hour shifts during normal business hours (Monday through Friday 8am – 5pm); position is subject to on-call status to meet operational needs.
