NASA HISTORY: Cassini Spacecraft Captures Saturn’s Spongy Moon Hyperion In 2005
By NASA // September 16, 2017
(NASA) – With Cassini’s mission officially over, let’s take a look back at this photo taken by the probe in 2005 of Hyperion, Saturn’s uniquely spongy moon.
The moon was discovered on this day in 1848 (September 16) by British amateur astronomer William Lassell, and later that year by American father and son astronomers William Cranch Bond and George Phillips Bond.
All three men are jointly credited with the discovery. Like Saturn itself, Hyperion would float on water due to its low-density composition.
