BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Melbourne Police have arrested a 67-year old man that included a lengthy standoff with SWAT team members after the suspect fired numerous gunshots in response to hang up 911 call from the residence.

The suspect is identified as Carlos A. Flores.

Police say a 911 call was received at around 9:54 p.m. Monday night that ended in a hang up from a residence on the 2800 block of Maderia Circle.

As a result, police responded to the corresponding residence after dispatchers flagged the call when they couldn’t attain “understandable information” from the caller.

When Melbourne Police officers arrived on scene they noticed a man talking on a phone with a gun in his hand, according to police.

Subsequently, the man fired several rounds of gunshots and verbally threatened a police officer.

The Melbourne SWAT team and Crisis Negotiation Unit then responded to the scene.

After numerous attempts to make contact with the suspect failed, authorities say a robot was called in.

“A BCSO tactical robot was sent into the residence where it helped determine the suspect’s location,” said Lt. Cheryl Trainer of the Melbourne Police Department.

“Chemical agents were introduced into the home, tactical entry was made and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.”

Police say there were no other occupants in the residence during the incident.

Flores was medically cleared, booked at the Melbourne Police Department and was turned over to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

Flores is charged with Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer.

The Melbourne Police Department thanks the community cooperation and patience during a lengthy, but successful standoff.
