BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Health First, a not-for-profit community-owned health care system that is the largest provider of charitable health care in Brevard County, touches the lives of thousands, yet it operates on the slimmest of margins, with uncompensated care for those who cannot not pay for all their services regularly exceeding $37 million.
In order to keep up with advances in new technologies, treatments and equipment, Health First must turn to the generosity of the community.
This critical health resource depends on gifts from the Health First Foundation for new equipment, for improved facilities and for advanced training that ascertains patients receive cutting-edge services and programs.
“Because of the thoughtful support of so many, such as our neighbors, local corporations, our patients, their families and 100 percent of our board, the Foundation can positively impact the health and well-being of Brevard and beyond,” said Foundation president Michael Seeley.
Among the many initiatives made possible through the Foundation have been advanced diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer through the purchase of endobronchial ultrasound technology and the opening of the Health First Cardiac Rehabilitation and Wellness Clinic, made possible in large part by funds raised the Foundation’s Grape Escape and through the Health First Associate Giving Program.
Significant Support
The Foundation’s scholarships for 41 Health First nurses have allowed these deserving professionals to pursue advanced degrees in nursing.
Additionally, the Foundation raised financial support for the expansion of the Hospice of Health First and the Bright Star Center for Grieving Children, as well for the purchase of the Accuvein vein finder for use in the emergency department at Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center.
The neonatal intensive care unit at Holmes Regional was also the recipient of significant Foundation support.
Funds generated by the Foundation enabled Health First to purchase night vision equipment for the First Flight helicopter and life-saving equipment such as digital mammography, the eICU patient monitoring system and the da Vinci robotic surgical equipment.
Health First Foundation is about supporting the health of Brevard residents, from the inside out.
“The Health First Foundation is a monument to the generosity of our community,” said Seeley.
The Health First Foundation will be honored during the 2017 Central Florida Humanitarian Awards, which will take place Thursday, Nov. 2 at the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place, located at 200 Rialto Place in Melbourne, Florida.

Recognizing Outstanding Individuals & Organizations Who Dedicate Their Time, Talent and Treasure
CENTRAL FLORIDA, USA – The 2017 Central Florida Humanitarians have been announced and include outstanding individuals and organizations from the medical, business, education and governmental communities.
Also announced today was the honoree for the Lifetime Achievement.
The Central Florida Humanitarian honorees will be recognized during a Gala event on Thursday, Nov. 2, at the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place in Melbourne, Florida.
The Central Florida Humanitarian Awards were created eight years ago by Space Coast Daily to recognize outstanding individuals and organizations that dedicate their time, talent or treasure to help people in need locally – and around the world.
TIME: In this category consider candidates who have selflessly and consistently devoted their time as volunteers at hospitals and nursing homes, in activities for the less fortunate and as organizers, administrators or operatives in the many other altruistic endeavors in our community.
TALENT: In this category give consideration to those who have volunteered their special talents and expertise to address specific circumstances in which the lives of those in need are improved.
TREASURE: The humanitarians in this category will include those who have generously shared their monetary good fortune and/or volunteered their time and efforts in fund raising for the advancement of a philanthropic cause.
All 2017 honorees will be featured in the Oct/Nov 2017 edition of Space Coast Daily magazine and online at SpaceCoastDaily.com. The magazine will be available the first week of October in both print and digital editions, which will also be available on SpaceCoastDaily.com.
For the eighth consecutive year, the Central Florida Humanitarian committee will also honor hospital and hospice volunteers from Health First Hospice, the Dr. Jey Pillai Center for Hospice Care at Wasdin Woods, VITAS, Hospice of St. Francis, Health First Cape Canaveral Hospital, Health First Viera Hospital, Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center, Health First Palm Bay Hospital, Wuesthoff Medical Center – Melbourne, Wuesthoff Medical Center – Rockledge, the VA Clinic in Viera, and Sebastian River Medical Center.
