BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – Brevard County Fire Rescue was praised by South Merritt Island residents after a fire ripped through a residential home and caretaker building on Friday.

The structure fire broke out about 4:30 a.m. on South Merritt Island in the 6900 block of South Tropical Trail, where the homes are in close proximity and a fire could spread home to home if left unchecked.

“We are so grateful to the BCSO and Fire Departments for protecting our home from the house fire so very close to us,” said Merritt Island resident Lila Buescher.

According to Brevard County Fire Rescue, the fire burned quickly through the wood frame structures, and luckily nobody was home at the time.

“Responding units could see the flames from miles away as they responded to the scene,” said Brevard County Fire Rescue officials. “Access issues down the long driveway and water supply made fighting the fire difficult.”

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.
