Panthers Sam Daniel, Richard Coil Garner Conference Athletes of the Week Honors

Daniel nets 47, Coil records fourth double-double

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — Guided by a career-high performance by Sam Daniel and another double-double from Richard Coil, his fourth of the season, the Florida Tech (4-6, 1-3 SSC) upset undefeated, No. 24-ranked Nova Southeastern (6-1, 3-1 SSC) on the road Saturday afternoon, 103-99.

It was the Panthers’ first Sunshine State Conference victory of season and as a result, both Daniel and Coil have garnered Sunshine State Conference accolades.

Daniel was named the Men’s Basketball Player of the Week and Coil was awarded the Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week,

A native of Kingsland, Georgia, Sam Daniel set a new career-high with 47 points on 65 percent (15-23) shooting. Daniel was spectacualr from beyond the arc, hitting seven of his 12 attempts for 58 percent shooting.

The senior also made 10-of-14 free throws, recorded eight rebounds, added two assists, and chipped in with two steals in 38 minutes of action.

He had 26 points at halftime and then followed that up with a 21-point performance in the second half to help FIT hold off the Sharks in the closing minutes. Daniel’s point total was not only a personal-best for the senior, but it also set a new building record for the most points ever scored by a single player at Rick Case Arena.

The 47 points are a 2017-18 game-high in the SSC and the most points scored by any FIT player in the last 13 years, under head coach Billy Mims.

The junior from Toledo, Ohio recorded a double-double, his fourth of the season, with 13 points on 6-for-8 shooting and added a dozen rebounds to complete the back half of the double.

Coil also had two steals, and one block. Ten of the Coil’s 12 rebounds were on the defensive end of the floor. He also did a great job defending the lane, altering numerous NSU shots during the contest.

The Crimson and Gray return to action on Dec. 18-19 hosting the annual Florida Tech Holiday Classic at the Clemente Center.

Joining the Panthers for this year’s edition of the classic are SSC foe Lynn, Miles College and Shawnee State.
