Back in the old days, and by that we mean only about two decades ago, keeping those pearly whites nice and healthy was not an expected part of the aging process.
As you got older, the chances were that you would lose your teeth and your smile. End of story.
If along the way, you experienced bite problems, or neck or jaw pain, or your teeth were out of line, there was often very little that could be done.
That was then, but this is now, and thanks to the expertise of state-of-the-art dentists such as Dr. Sangiv Patel, everyone can maintain a healthy, natural smile throughout a lifetime.

Patel’s Melbourne office offers cosmetic and restorative dentistry, dental implants, periodontics, endodontics, and treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and myofascial pain.
The practice was selected by the U.S. Commerce Association to receive the 2009 Best of Melbourne Award in dentistry.
The U.S. Commerce Association, which recognizes the crème de la crème of local businesses, annually identifies companies that provide outstanding service within each community.
Dr. Patel’s practice is focused on innovative, evidence-based and predictable dental solutions that provide functional stability to teeth, gums, the temporomandibular joint and the muscles, all critical aspects of supporting a healthy mouth.
Founder of the Innovative Smile, Dr. Patel is one of less than 30 clinicians worldwide to have been awarded a mastership in dental biometrics, an approach to treatment that provides for superior tooth preservation.
Dr. Patel has been in practice since 1993 and is recognized as a leader in the use of digital technology for diagnostics and restorations of the stomatognathic system, which comprises the mouth, jaws and associated areas.
This computer-aided dental technology, which makes traditional x-ray imaging obsolete, offers optimum results, not to mention the convenience of single-visit dentistry.
Dr. Patel has served as a Beta-tester and certified CEREC 3D in-office instructor for Sirona’s CEREC 3D restorative system.
CEREC 3D SYSTEM
Dr. Patel was the first dentist in the Space Coast to use the CEREC 3D system. CEREC 3D, or Chairside Economical Restorations Esthetic Ceramic, is a three-dimensional advanced CAD/CAM computer system that produces all-ceramic fillings and bridges.
The accuracy of the CEREC digital camera and software enables the creation of restorations customized for each patient without the need for dental molds.
The CEREC 3-D milling machine cuts and colors new restorations for a perfect fit and match to the patient’s other teeth. All this is accomplished in a couple of hours during a single visit, instead of multiple trips to the dentist’s office.
Unlike the traditional metal fillings of old, which weakened over time and often allowed decay to grow underneath the metal, CEREC uses a tooth-colored ceramic substance that actually strengthens tooth integrity.
An optical impression of the tooth replaces the goop in the past used for tooth impressions. The CEREC machine then converts these digital pictures into a three-dimensional virtual model.
This data is sent to a separate milling machine, also in Patel’s office, and in a few minutes, the all-ceramic, tooth-colored restoration is ready to be bonded in place. No potentially harmful metal is used in the mouth and the ceramic product is longer lasting and more natural looking.
In addition to use in fillings, the CEREC system is perfect for crowns, partial crowns and veneers.
Dr. Patel, affiliated with the American Dental Association, the American Academy of General Dentistry, the Florida Dental Association and the Brevard County Dental Society, served on the faculty of Loyola University of Chicago from 1989 to 1993 and has since 2005 been on the faculty of Eastern Florida State College.
Dr. Patel’s professional education includes a RDH degree, Magna Cum Laude in 1989; and a DDS degree, Magna Cum Laude in 1993. He is also an Associate Fellow in the American Academy of Implant Dentistry; Member of AAID (American Academy of Implant Dentistry); and served as a Tatum Mentor.
Dr. Patel was also on the faculty at the Advanced Dental Implant Institute in Puerto Rico and is a continuing education provider, instructor and Beta tester with Carestream, manufacturers of Kodak’s Cone Beam CT.
Cone Beam CT-CBCT, rare in most general dentistry practices, offers pinpoint accuracy without the distortion and overlapping that is found in traditional two-dimensional images.
This technology presents a crystal clear picture of the patient’s mouth on a 1:1 scale with all possible disease and pathology of the teeth and jaws, including the sinus cavities and the temporomandibular joints.
This extraordinary accuracy gives Patel the ability to select the least invasive and optimal approach for procedures such as dental implants, bone grafting, root canals, oral surgery, wisdom teeth and periodontal issues.
Beyond CEREC and Cone Beam CT, Dr. Patel also depends on dental technology that includes digital x-rays, more precise, but yet with only 1/6 the radiation exposure of traditional 35mm film x-rays.
Patients can’t help but be fascinated by the intraoral camera, another staple in Patel’s practice.
This tiny camera, although just a few millimeters in length, nevertheless delivers clear, precise and enlarged images of the mouth, teeth and gums and adds another level of accuracy to diagnosis and treatment, not to mention faster diagnosis with less chair time.
For years, Patel has utilized the T-Scan Bite Analysis System to gauge and treat dental occlusion, the unbalanced contact between teeth when the jaw is closed. Dental occlusion can cause tooth, jaw and neck pain and headaches and creates excessive wear on teeth.
The T-Scan Bite Analysis System replaces the old carbon paper used as a rudimentary method to record the patient’s bite. T-Scan Bite Analysis System captures the complete nuances of the patient’s bite through a hand-held sensor device connected to a computer.
Patients bite down on the thin sensor so the computer can record the bite. Dr. Patel designs a personalized treatment to correct the bite through the series of images and graphs the system provides.
For the treatment of TMJ issues, Patel relies on Bio-JVA Joint Vibration Analysis, which gauges TMJ disorders through friction and vibration of the joints in a procedure that lasts less than 10 seconds.
For myofascial issues Dr. Patel’s practice offers Surface EMG, the gold standard for recording muscle-specific activity and the only way to measure the actions and reactions of the muscles of the head and neck, a diagnostic tool that provides the ability to test treatments and bite positions before finalizing treatment.
Dr. Patel was a featured speaker and instructor at the Tekscan Dental Conference last fall in Las Vegas, where he instructed dentists on leveraging bite force dynamics in clinical applications to improve patient outcomes.
Even as a dental school student at the Loyola University of Chicago School of Dentistry, Patel had already formulated a patient-centered approach that was results-oriented, minimally invasive and geared towards consistently providing the best solutions.
For Dr. Patel’s patients, his harnessing of this extraordinary technology offers a win-win situation. Their teeth are better looking and longer lasting, yet treatment required the least possible amount of in-office visits.
“Digital technology brings more predictable results in one visit,” he said.
“We can do most of the procedures in-house and we don’t have to refer patients to other practices. There is probably no one in Central Florida who can offer this combination of technology.”
