FORMER NPA AND REPUBLICAN NOW DEMOCRAT
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Longtime Merritt Island resident Jack Smink has once again declared his candidacy for the Brevard County Commission District 2 seat – this time as a Democrat.
Smink, a noted Elvis impersonated in Brevard County since 1977, ran for the same seat in 2014 as a no party affiliation candidate against now sitting Commissioner Jim Barfield, who has announced he will not seek reelection.
Smink, the only Democrat in the District 2 race thus far, has previously been registered as no party affiliation and Republican.
Former Brevard County Commissioner and current Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency Director Chuck Nelson also filed this week to once again run for the District seat in which he previously served from 2006 to 2014.
The District 2 seat is sure to be hotly contested as in the past. In 2014, Barfield edged Michael Hartman by just 363 votes out of almost 10,000 that were cast in the Republican primary.
In the 2014 General Election, Smink garnered almost 28 percent of the vote against Barfield and the Libertarian candidate, J.J. McCurry.
Thus far, Smink and six Republicans have filed with the Brevard County Supervisor of Elections as candidates to replace Barfield in District 2 in 2018.
Republican candidates that have filed thus far in District 2 include Jim Glover, Robyn Hattaway, Chuck Nelson, Cordell Rolle, Timothy Street and Tim Tumulty.
Brevard County’s District 2 includes Merritt Island, Port Canaveral, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Avon by the Sea, Kennedy Space Center, Snug Harbor and Patrick Air Force Base.
