BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Michaylla Boring, a student on Eastern Florida State College’s Melbourne campus, has been selected as a Gold Scholar on Coca-Cola’s 2018 Academic Team.

Her selection was based on her score in the All-USA Academic Team competition, for which more than 2,000 applications were received.

The program is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and is administered by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Boring will receive a $1,500 scholarship.

Boring, 18, is a dual enrolled, homeschooled student who will graduate in May with her Associate in Arts degree. She serves as president of the Chi Nu Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa on EFSC’s Melbourne campus.

She has been accepted to the University of Central Florida’s Lead Scholars Academy, a selective, two-year academic leadership development program for first-time-in-college students, and will start at UCF this summer majoring in business management.

“I’m a leader here at EFSC and I defintely want to continue to build my leadership skills,” said Boring.

“Because I’m going into business management the LEAD Scholar Academy will help me with that profession.”

She also is a member of the 2018 All-Florida Academic Team along with nine other Eastern Florida students in recognition of their outstanding work in the classroom and community. The team consists of 132 students from the Florida College System.

Boring plans to continue tutoring K-12 students in English grammar while at UCF, a volunteer passion she developed at EFSC while serving as a peer tutor and through an honor society service project. Chapter members wrote and published a book about a boy who was missing his right arm and had to navigate being bullied.

“Our overall mission for the project was to help children understand that people with physical differences, such as missing limbs, are not individuals to be afraid of, but people who are unique and special for who they are,” said Boring.

She will be recognized along with the other 2018 Coca-Cola Academic Team Scholars at Phi Theta Kappa’s Annual National Convention in April in Kansas City, Mo.
