Florida Tech’s Sam Schiano Named SSC Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech’s Sam Schiano has been named the Sunshine State Conference’s Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week for Mar. 12-18.

This is her second time receiving the award this season.

The Perry Hall, Maryland product recorded 13 ground balls, 10 draw controls, eight caused turnovers to go along with eight goals and two assists to lead No. 5 Florida Tech to 2-0 record last week.

Schiano tallied five ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers, and produced five goals and an assist, as the Panthers dominated No. 23 McKendree, 19-7, on Tuesday. In FIT’s 16-5 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday, the junior midfielder led all players with eight ground balls, seven draw controls and six caused turnovers, in addition to recording three goals and one assist.

For the season, Schiano tops the SSC with 36 ground balls and 28 caused turnovers and leads FIT with 51 draw controls. She also ranks second on the team with 27 goals to help the Panthers reach a 9-0 record this season.

Schiano and the women’s lacrosse team are back in action on Saturday, Mar. 24, hosting No. 1 Florida Southern in a Top-5 matchup at Florida Tech Panther Stadium. The contest is set to begin at 4 p.m. ET.
