BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Florida Highway Patrol units responded to two-vehicle crash early Friday morning that resulted in one of the vehicles catching fire and an off-duty Orange County Fire Rescue Lieutenant pulling one of the drivers to safety from a burning car on State Road 528, over the St. Johns River Bridge.

Everyone involved suffered only minor injuries.

FHP has released the names of the drivers involved in the crash as Zachary Daniels, 30, from Rockledge, and Rhonda Nagy, 54, from Merritt Island.

The crash happened around 6:40 a.m.

Troopers say the investigation has revealed that Daniels was traveling behind Nagy heading westbound on SR 528. Nagy slowed down for another crash that just happened, causing Daniels to rear end his 2016 Honda into the back of Nagy’s 1993 Volvo.

The result of the collision caused Nagy’s car to catch fire.

Lt. Jason McNally, 40, of Orange County Fire Rescue pulled up to the crash, shortly after it happened, and helped Daniels pull Nagy from the burning car to safety.

Lt. McNally and Daniels both fell into the St. Johns River during the process, according to Sgt. Kim Montes of the Florida Highway Patrol.
