BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – One of the most illustrious Space Coast high school football careers ever was launched in early September of 1982 when Anthony Mitchell was pressed into the starting quarterback role in the very first game of his sophomore season against third-ranked Jacksonville Raines due to injury to the Titusville Terrier senior quarterback.

Dale Mayes, Titusville High’s offensive coordinator for the great Terrier teams of the early to mid-80s, recalls, “We lost that game, 27-14, but Anthony was poised, ran the offense almost flawlessly, played like a veteran, was wise beyond his youth, and after that night, we never looked back.”

Mitchell went on to lead the Terriers to three Cape Coast Conference titles, three district titles, three regional titles, two Class AAA State Championships in ’82 and ‘83 and almost a third state title in his senior season.

Anthony’s speed and quickness, and ability to successfully read and run the complex triple option in legendary THS Head Coach Al Werneke’s wishbone offense, set him apart from the rest of the field.

He finished his high school career with a W-L record of 34-7, rushing for more than 2,500 yards, passing for 2,000-plus yards, throwing for 17 TDs and scoring 19 on the ground.

Mitchell’s prowess on the gridiron earned him Class AAA All-State quarterback honors in ’82, ’83 and ’84 (first team ’83 and ’84), first team All-Space Coast Conference ’82-’84, and All-Central Florida ’83 and ’84. In 1984 he was a member of the Florida Super Senior team, which played stars from Georgia in the inaugural FL-GA High School All-Star Football Game.

Coach Mayes, summing up Mitchell’s impact on the Terriers’ two championship seasons, said, “Anthony Mitchell is one of the greatest leaders I’ve ever witnessed in Brevard high school sports. He commanded a huddle, practiced like it was game-night, and like any coach would want, ‘the bigger the stage, the bigger his play.’ For all of our immense talent and quality coaching at THS in 1982 and 1983, without Anthony, we don’t win those 2 titles.”

JERSEY RETIRED AT THS

Highly recruited by stellar programs such as Clemson, West Virginia, Oklahoma and Notre Dame, Mitchell chose to matriculate at the University of Michigan for both the athletic and academic opportunities the prestigious institution offered.

He started his college career as a Wolverine at wide receiver but moved to safety where he earned three letters and was a starter his junior and senior years.

Mitchell’s greatest aspiration was to go to the next level and play professional football, but that was not to be. He did, however, fulfill one of his life-long dreams of playing in the Rose Bowl while at UM.

In fact, he played in two Rose Bowls, the first in 1987 and the second in 1989, as well as the 1985 Fiesta Bowl and 1987 Hall of Fame Bowl.

With a bachelor’s degree in sports management and communication, Mitchell has gone on to a very successful career as an executive at Foot Locker and presently as an acquisition manager for Gold’s Gym in Maryland, where he now makes his home.

Anthony attributes much of his success in athletics and life to his Titusville support group of family and friends, which includes his mother Lucille, his stepfather Hubert Williams, friends Curtis and Wayne Williams and his coach “Uncle” Dale Mayes.

Anthony Mitchell, who was cited as one of the top Brevard high school quarterbacks of all-time in a 1985 Orlando Sentinel article, is one of only five football stars to have had their jersey number (No. 15) retired at THS. We’re proud to add that #15 to the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame this spring.
