BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Former Melbourne Central Catholic Hustler, Miami Hurricane and now Miami Dolphin wide receiver Rashawn Scott must be considered among the greatest athletes to ever step onto a Brevard County field or court.

The fact that Scott is among the best ever on the Space Coast and was able to step onto the playing surfaces at MCC is a Hall of Fame story itself.

Without a father figure in his life and his mother struggling, Scott’s Pop Warner football coach saw something special in Rashawn, not just as a player but as a child who if given an opportunity to succeed, would.

Staying with his coach and their already sizeable family of six children on many occasions, Scott would eventually become a part of the family himself as Scott’s birth mother agreed to allow him to live with Mike and Freddie Erdman beginning in sixth grade.

Rashawn was behind in school, but Freddie Erdman, who has a degree in exceptional education from UCF, home-schooled him for sixth grade while he attended a Catholic school. By the end of that year, he had finished both sixth and seventh grades.

“We’re extremely proud of him, he had to overcome a lot of educational handicaps,” said Mike Erdman. “Just talk to him, look in his eyes, watch him smile and you’ll know what he’s about.

College offers poured in from everywhere for Rashawn Scott. West Virginia, Michigan State and USF were among the 20 plus scholarship offers he received before deciding to stay in Florida and attend Miami to play for the Hurricanes.

At Melbourne Central Catholic High, Scott continued to work hard on and off the field. He played football, basketball and ran track, routinely running the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds.

On the gridiron, Scott was a hot prospect.

“The Erdmans are family,” Scott said. “They’re beside me – faithful. We go to Mass. They really uplifted my religion. Sports is what we’re all about – they really inspired me by what they do.”

During his junior season at MCC, he caught 45 balls for 901 yards and 12 scores and exploded in his senior year as he accounted for nearly 2,500 yards of all-purpose offense.

The numbers are staggering, posting 845 receiving yards, 945 rushing yards, and he threw for 565 yards accounting for 31 total touchdowns.

He played a little defense too. Scott had three interceptions and returned two fumbles for touchdowns as a safety.

His new family was never far and always supportive. His brother Mike, a sophomore walk-on receiver at Georgia, was Rashawn’s quarterback during Scott’s sophomore and junior years at MCC, while his brother Matthew, a student at LSU, was his quarterback during his senior year.

Rashawn Scott has appeared in three regular season and one playoff game for the Dolphins. Miami is expecting Scott to play a bigger role in 2018 just as he has done in the Dolphins community off the field.

College offers poured in from everywhere. West Virginia, Michigan State and USF were among the 20 plus scholarship offers he received before deciding to stay in Florida and attend Miami to play for the Hurricanes.

As a freshman, he saw action in six games before suffering a season-ending injury. Scott bounced back in his sophomore year playing in nine games and finishing as the team’s second-leading receiver with 512 yards and three touchdowns on 35 catches. The next two years proved to be a test for Scott as he would appear in only four games.

He was injured to start his senior season and redshirted, returning to the Canes in 2015. His redshirt senior season would be his breakout year at Miami, finishing with a team-high and career-high totals of 52 receptions, 695 yards and five touchdowns.

Scott totaled 108 yards on six catches with one 58-yard touchdown reception against in-state rival Florida State on national television.

He finished at Miami as a four-year letterman playing in 32 career games with 11 starts and recording 91 receptions for 1,247 yards and eight touchdowns.

In 2016, Scott was signed by the Dolphins as an undrafted college free agent. Scott worked hard and was impressive but was released on the final roster cuts. However, he was later re-signed to the Dolphins practice squad.

So far Scott has appeared in three regular season and one playoff game for the Dolphins. Miami is expecting Scott to play a bigger role in 2018 just as he has done in the Dolphins community off the field.

Already giving back as a young NFL payer, Scott has devoted a lot of his time to charity and spending time talking with kids.

Giving back, the service of others and standing out on the field of play is a familiar theme for this year’s Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame induction class, and no better inductee may come to epitomize that more than Rashawn Scott.

Former Melbourne Central Catholic Hustler, Miami Hurricane and now Miami Dolphin wide receiver Rashawn Scott must be considered among the greatest athletes to ever step onto a Brevard County field or court.
